gar‧bage, n. /ˈgɑrbɪdʒ/

Literally “clothing,” from slang term “garb” (itself from Italian garbo, “grace”). Referred to the clothing that the upper classes would wear once – perhaps to a ball or other social event – then discard. The clothing would be recovered and re-cut by thrifty tailors.
