Fake Etymologies

Interesting is better than true.

pix‧ie, adj. /pɪksi/

One of a pair of words originating from the idiom “pretty as a picture.” In an odd semantic split, the Gallic-sounding “picturesque” came to describe things grand in their beauty, and the Teutonic-sounding “pixie” came to descibe things small and cute in their beauty. Relatedly, “pixie faeries” was shortened simply to “pixies.”
