kitch‧en, n. /ˈkɪtʃən/

From German Kit, with -chen diminutive suffix. Any collection or assemblage of tools is referred to in German as das Kit, a term that survives into English in “first aid kit” or “drum kit.” The original Kitchen were cooking pots containing all the tools required to cook for an army on the march. As the Germanic tribes were absorbed by various empires, it came to describe the room that contained those same tools.
