vol‧un‧teer, n. /ˌvɒl.ənˈtɪər/

Created by adding the suffix “-teer” (as in “musketeer” or “Mouseketeer”) to the word “volume.” A colloquial expression for “person who speaks up.” First used to motivate American elementary school students in the early 1900s – as those students grew up, they took the word with them.
