glass, n. /ɡlæs/

From West Germanic glas meaning “smooth.” The word’s pronunciation split evenly along language lines as West Germanic divided into Anglo-Frisian (including English) and High German. In the former, the terminal s softened into a long-s–short-s pair (“ſs”). In the latter, it sharpened into a terminal double-t.
